This is an action or a feeling responding to a particular situation at the right time, the right way, the right amount or/and the right reason. Not too much and not too little. The key to the Golden Mean is in moderation. I picked Aristotle because I believe that he has the best ethical philosophy. I agree with Aristotle’s ideas about the Golden Mean because I believe that if you are a moderate person, you will not take anything to an extreme and you’ll make good decisions. He also believes in the Sofia Virtue which is that you have to think straight, learn well and act accordingly. This idea mostly settles in the consequences of actions and how you may respond on them. The Golden Mean also tell us that you need to require virtue because it shows how moral a person is, but what I don’t agree that if a person is virtues, they will know exactly when to stop on their own. I don’t agree with that idea because sometimes virtuous people are forced to do something they don’t like to do so they try to stop it, but they are unable. Currently, abortion is a major issue facing the world, especially for teens. Abortion is when there is a conscious or intentional termination in human pregnancy. There are two types of it: therapeutic and elective. Therapeutic is when the mother needs to abort because of health issues while elective, is when the mother wants to abort because she doesn’t want the baby. The two ways to abort are: medical and surgical. Medical is when the doctor gives the patient some drugs to terminate the pregnancy. The only problem with medical abortion is that it can only function for the first nine weeks after conception and the patient will receive strong cramps. The other way, the surgical is when the doctor removes the fetus by manual vacuum aspiration/dilatation/evacuation. These three different ways are by absorbing the organs or pulling the fetus part by part. This can only be practice for 15 to 24 weeks after conception. According to Aristotle’s thought, abortion is not following the Golden Mean because it is an action that doesn’t respond at the right time by making a decision at a wrong time, in the right way and the right amount of reason, by choosing an excess. Also, abortion is not following the Sofia Virtue because when you are making the decision to abort, you are not thinking straight, acting accordingly, and learning well because you are choosing an option that is an excess. Another idea that abortion is not following Aristotle’s beliefs is that people who are choosing to abort are choosing an excess instead the mean. In this case, the deficit will be keeping the baby and the mean will be giving the baby for adoption. Adoption will actually be a mean because it is what is morally correct and is the best for the baby because he/she will be with a family that will love them instead of a place where they won’t be loved. While keeping the baby will be a deficit because they might know that they weren’t wanted and that will harm the baby. Aristotle also thought that if someone was virtuous, they would know when exactly to stop on their own or begin. When we relate this thought with an example of rape and adoption, many people disagree because many girls want to stop the rape, but they can’t. Later, their consequences are that they are expecting a baby from someone who rapes them. According to Michael Smith, rape is the reason for 13,000 of 1. 3 million annual abortions (Smith, â€Å"Women’s Health†). It may not be too many people but you can ask yourself about how many babies are being aborted. 13,000 have been killed because of it, and I believe that it is morally incorrect, that the safest thing to do is give it to adoption. Instead of going to an excess, these girls should use the Sofia Virtue and think straight and make an appropriate decision that will not affect anybody. Based on the moral reasoning of Aristotle, the correct ethical response to abortion is abstinence. To have sex at the right time, in the right way by protecting yourself, and with the right amount of reason so that if there is an unexpected baby, you will be prepare for it. Frankenstein As Victim "Am I to be thought the only criminal, when all human kind sinned against me?" (Shelly 165) - Frankenstein's Monster Upon reading Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, it is all too easy to come to the conclusion that the creature Dr. Victor Frankenstein creates is a "vile insect" (68) that should be "overwhelm [ed] with... furious detestation and contempt" (68). But is this really accurate? Is this "monster" truly the "wretched devil" (68) Victor believes him to be? Or is he actually a "fallen angel whom [Victor] drove from joy for no misdeed... [and that] misery made a fiend" (69)? The case for the creature being a "hideous monster" (102) is quite strong. He murders young William Frankenstein with his bare hands; afterwards, he frames Justine Moritz for the crime because he "is forever robbed of all that she could give [him, therefore] she shall atone" (103). Victor's best friend, Henry Clerval, is murdered by the creature as well. Finally, the monster fulfills his promise of being "'with [Victor] on [his] wedding night'" (139) by killing Elizabeth, Victor's cousin and new bride. It would seem that this beast truly is, in Victor's opinion, unequaled in "deformity and wickedness" (122). However, after closer examination, one finds that the creature, though he has committed heinous acts of violence, is not entirely at fault. In fact, it would seem that the individual responsible for the monster's actions is Dr. Victor Frankenstein himself. When Victor first creates the creature, he is struck with "breathless horror and disgust" (35) at its very appearance. Because of this, he abandons it, not caring about its welfare or safety. This could be seen as somewhat analogous to giving birth to a baby, then leaving it in the woods to fend for itself. After being deserted by his creator, the creature becomes nothing more than a "poor, helpless, miserable wretch" (71), living on a diet of berries and acorns, and feeling Do 2 "frightened... [and] desolate" (71). He learns the language and ways of man by observing a small family for a couple of years, and yearns for their company so that they can be "sympathizing with [his] feelings and cheering [his] gloom" (93). However, all his encounters with humans end with the humans experiencing feelings of "horror and consternation" (96) (due to his disfigured appearance) while his heart sinks "with bitter sickness" (97) from these rejections. When he approaches an old man eating breakfast, the old man flees in terror. When he attempts to befriend the blind De Lacy, Felix darts forward and tears him "with supernatural force... from his father" (97). And when he rescues a young girl from drowning in a swiftly flowing river, he is not thanked with kind words, but instead with bullets. Thus, the "reward of [his] benevolence... [is] the miserable pain of a wound which shattered the flesh and bone" (101). It comes as no surprise, then, when the creature comes to the conclusion that "there was none among the myriads of men that existed who would pity or assist [him]" (97), he declares "ever-lasting war against the species, and, more than all, against him [Victor] who had formed [him, the monster], and sent him forth to this insupportable misery" (97). He murders William Frankenstein because he is a relative of Victor, and frames Justine because he knows she will never be sympathetic towards him, since she is a member of the human race (talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time). When the monster finally gets a chance to speak with his creator, he has but one request: "a creature of another sex, but as hideous as [him] self" (105). If Victor complies with this request, the creature will, for once in his existence, "excite the sympathy of some living thing" (105) and promises that no "other human being shall ever see [them] again" (105). Victor agrees to this at first, but later decides that it will be too risky to create another being which might be "ten thousand times more malignant than her mate" (120). Upon coming to this conclusion, Victor destroys the second creature, leaving the first, once again, alone to "grovel in the intensity of [his] wretchedness" (123). Weather Derivatives and their effectiveness for Indian Power sector Weather derivatives are instruments used to hedge the weather dependent risk, which could be termed as financial gain or loss due to variability in daily climatic conditions. In the power sector the weather risk is huge both on demand and supply side as they are dependent on weather related factors. On the demand side the amount of energy required for both heating and cooling depends on the weather. Similarly on the supply side the hydro based power plants are dependent on annual rainfall and snowfall. If the rainfall is insufficient there would be less production and in that case the producers will have to buy from the costly spot markets to meet up the contractual obligation. This is highly risky and hence the hydro based power producers need a hedge against the weather risk. Variation in temperature, rainfall etc means that it would affect the power consumption. Indian electricity market is highly regulated with majority of control related to buying and selling of power is rested with the government therefore price risk in Indian context is not an issue but the volume risk is a major threat. Weather derivatives offer a feasible solution to overcome the volume related risk in Indian power sector as it can be implemented without disturbing the market structure or by making huge infrastructural investments. An essential requirement for trading weather derivatives is the availability of accurate historical and current weather data which is available at the Indian Meteorological Department. The financial market is well developed in India. One important requirement could be developing appropriate weather based indices, designing pricing mechanism for weather derivative contracts and educating the participants about the concept. Once regulatory roadblocks are cleared these contracts could be listed on major stock and commodity exchanges of the country where users, producers and other participants may trade them. State electricity boards and government owned power p roducers would benefit from weather derivatives. Discrimination Religion, national origin, race, and social status are the suspect classifications of discrimination, but are these the only categories that should not be discriminated against? People today are searching for equal rights and opportunities. No one should be suffering from any type of discrimination, but they are. Discrimination is an unfair treatment of a person or group based on prejudice, therefore sex, disability, and age should be included in the suspect classifications of discrimination (â€Å"Discrimination†). Sex discrimination is the differential treatment based on sex (â€Å"Answer†). Traditionally in American culture higher value has been given to males, this is why sex discrimination is commonly found in the work place among women. Focus in a workplace where sex discrimination is prevalent; the choices are not made based on the ability of the person, but their gender. The reason why gender is a big issue for women in the workplace is because women are looked at as part of the household committee instead of in the economical world. Women are not seen as capable entities, but solely as â€Å"baby-makers†. This method of conducting business has deterred many women that are far more capable than the men who were given the job. Sex discrimination in the employment world is not a new issue, but one that stems from the past. The Fair Labor Standard Act of 1938 established a minimum wage for both men and women providing equality (â€Å"Answer†). Even though this act was passed, many women are still paid less than men for the same job. In 1963, the Equal Pay Act acknowledged women as workers and not just homemakers (â€Å"Answer†). A decrease in the above mentioned can lead to difficulties in functioning normally and carrying out activities of daily living. As we get older, many things in life seem to get harder and we even notice some changes to how we used to feel and do certain things in our daily activities. If you ever spent any time in a retirement setting with your loved ones, you too will see the changes. But why do we seem to do less as we age? If you visit these retirement communities, you will see lots of fun activities for the older population like pools, shuffleboard, Ping-Pong tables, and many other activities that try to incorporate social and physical wellbeing but are never in use. Many older people even think that they are always tired, too old, sick, or just to out of shape to exercise. Some rarely leave their residence because they suffer from depression as they do not have family nearby and do not have a stable social outlet. Challenges There are some challenges as to why older generations are not getting enough exercise. First, they are on a fixed income and think that they are not able to pay for gym memberships. This can be alleviated in a few ways. Some insurance groups will pay their gym membership. One other way is the local YMCA that is in almost every city and have very affordable rates no matter what your age is. As they are low on monetary funds, they may also be unable to pay for a fitness coach or personal trainer. They will want someone to show them what exercises to do as they may not be sure what exercises they can do or how a certain exercise can be done. Some may not want to exercise as they do have aches and pains and no not feel as though exercise is attainable through their discomfort. As we age our balance is not what it used to be and have some functional decline. Now that they are at a higher risk for falls, a new injury and hip fracture are always in the back of their mind. Lastly is our social decline. As we age our social outlook with peers and others is at its lowest point in life. Older people are less likely to exercise alone and having a partner with similar goals would be optimal. Risk factors to improve Normal aging changes our body and its systems. Some of these changes include our cardiovascular, nervous system, musculoskeletal system, and other systems (Haripriya, 2018). With exercise we can improve our health on many levels. Although we have certain risk factors such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabet es, osteoporosis and the list go on. By improving ones fitness, you can improve your health, lessen symptoms of a disease, or may even avoid them all together. Cardiorespiratory endurance will improve the heart with better blood and oxygen supply, stronger heart contractions, increased blood volume, and lower blood pressure (Fahey, 2001). This also reduces cardiovascular disease by maintaining healthy lipids, lowers inflammation, helps prevent diabetes and obesity by maintaining proper fat percentages (Fahey, 2001). None of the examples above is new news to most but a reminder may be order. Maybe the more important think to know is maybe what can older generations do to improve their health through fitness. Exercises A slow start to a better healthier is within reach. The American College of Sports Medicine calls for moderate intensity aerobic exercise a total of 150 minutes five days a week, thats only thirty minutes a day for cardiovascular health (Baechle, 2010). As you progre ss and meet your goals, you can then increase intensity and /or duration for even more benefits to your health. Most people start off with a bit lower intensity or low impact type exercises. Some good examples would be walking, swimming, water aerobics, or even mild floor exercises like body weight leg raises or chair to toe stands. After you feel a bit more confident, you may increase your intensity to a faster or longer duration of the above exercises or do some aerobics or yoga. You will see results rather quickly as your body adapts then you may want to incorporate a bit more advanced resistance strength training such as Pilates or the machines and light weights at a gym.
